Rabbonim and Educators in Netanya Oppose Performance

By Y. Ariel

Rabbonim and educators in Netanya have come out against a performance scheduled for next week (following Tisha B'Av) claiming to be chareidi. In a letter they issued the rabbonim note, "We were very disturbed to hear about the individuals who are scheming to hold publicly and openly in our city a family event [billed as a `happening'] that contains terrible immodesty and has been banned by all gedolei Yisroel." Following the objections voiced by the rabbonim, the Netanya Municipality withdrew its sponsorship for the event.

The letter, which is signed by rabbonim and educators from Netanya, including roshei kollelim, neighborhood rabbis, synagogue rabbis, institution heads and morei tzedek, calls on Netanya residents to boycott the event, saying, "Anyone who lends a hand and strengthens these people who lead others to sin is considered to have breached the walls set by the rabbis." They also note gedolei Yisroel shlita have clearly stated their opposition to "arvei shira," where singers appear before mixed audiences — even when separate sections are arranged.

Chareidi councilmen, who conveyed the objections of the rabbonim to the city council, report that the municipality has decided to withdraw its support.
