Government Investigating Committee to Look into Failures
in Handling Holocaust Survivors
By Eliezer Rauchberger
In a rare move the Knesset State Control Committee decided to
set up a government investigating committee to look into
successive Israeli governments' failures in handling
Holocaust reparations and general aid for Holocaust
survivors.
This is only the second time since the founding of the State
that the State Control Committee has used its legal authority
to launch an investigating committee. The last time was 25
years ago when a committee was formed to look into the
regulation of bank shares.
The decision was reached following a fiery discussion and
with the support of all committee members present, with the
exception of MK Amira Dotan (Kadima). The Ministers of
Finance, Welfare and Pensioners Affairs as well as Raanan
Dinur, director-general of the Prime Minister's Office, were
summoned to the meeting but elected not to appear, triggering
resentment and anger among many Knesset members.
