Jerusalem Municipality Launches Pesach Cleanup Campaign
By Yechiel Sever
The Jerusalem Municipality launched an extensive Pesach
cleanup campaign, including all of the public spaces under
the municipality's responsibility.
With city officials expecting over a million visitors during
Chol Hamoed, Mayor Rabbi Uri Lupoliansky announced special
arrangements would be made to accommodate traffic. Work on
various development projects would be halted starting this
week after work crews clean up construction sites, remove
impediments, build fences and erect signs at pedestrian
crossing and junctions.
This year Mekorot, the national water company, has again
agreed to supply Jerusalem with well water instead of water
from sources used throughout the year, mainly the National
Water Carrier bringing water from the Kinneret. Deputy Mayor
and Gichon board member Rabbi Uri Maklev said that in order
to properly kasher all of the infrastructures used to
transport the water and to allow business and factory owners
to prepare for the change, the city would switch to well
water several days before Pesach.
By using well water the municipality is sparing a significant
segment of the population that takes pains to avoid regular
tap water, the need to buy bottled water, which can cost
large families hundreds of shekels.
