Modi'in Illit and Nearby Communities to Set Up Joint Industrial Park

By M. Green

The Modi'in Illit City Council unanimous approved an agreement proposed by Mayor Rabbi Yaakov Guterman to set up a joint industrial park with Modi'in District communities and Shilat in the Shilat area near Modi'in Illit.

The project would make Modi'in Illit a 50-percent partner in income generated through property taxes, government funding and other levies. During a City Council meeting Rabbi Guterman noted that in addition to the major achievement economically, a pledge has been made to keep Shabbos and kashrus in the commercial areas to be set up outside the city, though the area is not under Modi'in Illit jurisdiction, a move that could later lead to improved Shabbos observance in the existing commercial zone at Shilat Junction.

The Mayor's success in bringing in high-tech companies and commercial services to boost employment for local women is unexpectedly becoming a source of income for Modi'in Illit. Mr. Shimon Sussan, council head of the Modi'in District, and representatives of the Shilat residential community, who have been unable to obtain commercial permits due to bureaucratic problems in changing their zoning from agricultural land to commercial land, asked Rabbi Guterman to help by using his extensive connections.
