"When the Scent of Elections Is in the Air, the Competition Begins to See Who Can Strike Hardest at Judaism, Halacha and Its Flag-Bearers"

By Yechiel Sever

Rabbonim and dayonim easily dismissed remarks by Justice Minister Daniel Friedman who called for women to be included in the Rabbinate botei din. "When the scent of elections is in the air, the competition begins to see who strikes hardest at Judaism, halacha and its flag-bearers," noted one dayan. "Apparently as part of Friedman's obligation to the Olmert government he has decided to change direction and bring votes into the party. For those who thought the Shinui worldview has faded away, Friedman sent a reminder. Apparently striking a blow at the botei din is more popular than introducing reforms in the courts, at least during the elections and primaries season.

"Unfortunately there are groups within the national-religious sector, Reform women, Tzohar rabbis and those like them, who will pounce on these remarks as if they had come upon a great find. They are the ones who fan the flames of hatred and enmity everywhere, against the Rabbinate beis din system and its dayonim."

These remarks came in response to comments Friedman made during a meeting of the State Control Committee: "I'd be happy to see women [presiding] at the Rabbinate botei din as well. The Rabbinate botei din are controlled and run by a certain group, and it would be good if we saw women there, too." MK Rabbi Gafni, who was present at the meeting, spoke out against the Justice Minister's remark, which stands in contradiction to halacha.
