City of Jerusalem Launches Life Centers
By Betzalel Kahn
The City of Jerusalem is set to launch Life Centers, a
project initiated by Mayor Rabbi Uri Lupoliansky to develop
special public spaces designed to serve various functions and
equipped with sophisticated equipment and safety features.
The first centers to be opened are Gan Sanhedria in the
Sanhedria neighborhood, Gan Esther in Geulah and a third
center in Maalot Dafna. During the course of a recent City
Finance Committee meeting on the issue, opposition councilmen
from Meretz voiced their objections to the construction of
the centers in chareidi neighborhoods, but the committee,
headed by Deputy Mayor Rabbi Eliezer Simchayoff, approved the
plan and budgeted nearly NIS 4 million ($950,000).
The centers are slated for construction in the hearts of the
respective neighborhoods, with open expanses, public parks
and playgrounds, where general renovations will be performed
and new equipment installed. Special nooks will be set up at
the Life Centers, offering activities suited for all ages.
General improvements will also be carried out on the access
ways to these areas, such as repaving streets and installing
signposts, traffic signs and crosswalk markings.
The Mayor says the Life Centers will answer a vital need in
various neighborhoods, alleviating the strain on large
families and providing parents and children a place to relax
during their leisure time.
The Life Centers will join dozens of parks and playgrounds
that the Department for City Improvement has built and
upgraded during the past year, installing playground
equipment, rubber playing surfaces, benches, railings and
drinking fountains and laying grass, landscaping, irrigation
systems and pathways.
