Israelis Spend NIS 200 Million on Dried Fruit for Tu
BeShevat
By M. Green
Israelis spend an estimated NIS 600 million ($140 million)
per year on dried fruit according to a survey conducted by
the Federation of Israeli Chambers of Commerce. During the
period preceding Tu BeShevat there is a 300 percent increase
in dried fruit consumption, which means 34 percent of all
dried fruit sales take place during this period.
Economists at the Federation predict that dried fruit sales
will total NIS 200 million ($47 million) during the weeks
leading up to Tu BeShevat this year. Approximately 75 percent
of all households are expected to purchase dried fruit for Tu
BeShevat with the most demand for dates, apricots, prunes,
raisins and figs.
"Retailers and retail chains are expected to launch numerous
and varied campaigns to sell dried fruit before Tu BeShevat,"
says Reuven Schlussel, chairman of the Federation's food
department and CEO of Leiman Schlussel Ltd., "which will
lower dried fruit prices by an average of 10 percent-20
percent compared to the rest of the year." Economists at the
Federation note the average household spends NIS 50-60 on
dried fruits for Tu BeShevat.
