Historic Conference for Dayanim in the US
by Dei'ah Vedibur Staff
On Tuesday and Wednesday (11-12 Shvat / January 30-31) a
conference for Dayanim sponsored by the Monsey-based Eternal
Jewish Family Organization was held in Brooklyn. The
conference brought together dayanim from Los Angeles,
Montreal, Chicago, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Monsey
and Lakewood, along with rabbonim from Florida, Denver,
Baltimore, Houston and Brooklyn. Representatives of the
Rabbinical Council of America, the Israeli Chief Rabbinate,
and the Vaad HaRabbonim Haolami LeInyonei Giyur founded by
HaRav Chaim Kreiswirth zt"l also attended.
The conference focused on the importance of setting up a
system of established botei dinim made up of
talmidei chachomim to deal with all halachic matters
including geirus. The conference also stressed the
importance of doing all geirus according to the
halochoh, without any compromises. Various specific halachic
issues were also discussed. The representatives of the eight
botei din in attendance agreed to work in full
cooperation in order to promote proper standards in
geirus matters, and they called upon other
organizations to set similar standards for geirus.
Until recently, most conversions in the US were performed by
private rabbis without a traditional beis din with
three proper dayanim.
The conference was honored by the participation of HaRav
Reuven Feinstein, rosh yeshiva of Staten Island and
rabbinical chairman of Eternal Jewish Family, and HaRav
Aharon Schechter, rosh yeshiva of Yeshivas Rabbeinu Chaim
Berlin, along with other leading rabbonim from the US. The
participants praised Rav Leib Tropper, the rosh yeshiva of
Kol Yaakov in Monsey, and chairman of Eternal Jewish Family
for his ongoing efforts, and acknowledged with gratitude the
continuing support of the Lillian Jean Kaplan Jewish Pride
Through Education project.
