Funding Transfer for Yeshivas, Kollelim and Guaranteed Income Approved

By Eliezer Rauchberger

The Knesset Finance Committee approved an NIS 22-million ($5- million) transfer for yeshivas, kollelim and Guaranteed Income as part of the 2006 budget, based on an agreement reached with UTJ more than six months ago. UTJ representatives demanded that the back funds be paid before they would support the 2007 budget.

The agreement included a provision not to reduce the level of yeshiva support, kollel stipends or Guaranteed Income before the end of 2006. The NIS 22 million was intended to meet this condition.

MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni welcomed the decision, but warned that the 2007 budget approved in a first reading and currently being reviewed and updated for second and third readings contains drastic cuts in the yeshiva and kollel budgets as well as in Guaranteed Income payments, where the funding cut is smaller. Rabbi Gafni says if these budget components are not rectified before the final budget votes the damage to the Torah world could be severe.
