Suits Imported from Turkey and Sold During Holidays May Contain Shatnez

By Betzalel Kahn

Suits imported from Turkey and sold in Eretz Yisroel during the holidays might contain shatnez. Concerns were raised after an avreich, who chose not to rely on the spot checks conducted by the importer, sent his new suit for testing and the shatnez lab reported it did indeed contain shatnez.

Industry figures note since there is no supervision of the manufacturing and shipping processes, shatnez labs are unable to provide a picture of the scope of the problem and rein it in. Rabbonim involved in shatnez testing are trying to locate as many of the suit purchasers as possible.

The only way to safeguard against shatnez is to demand observant clothing dealers sell only garments with supervision over the manufacturing process or fully tested by an authorized testing lab with individual labels from the lab attached to every garment.
