Netanyahu: "We Won't Restore Children's Allowances"
By Yechiel Sever
In a speech before a gathering of executives on Sunday,
Opposition Chairman MK Binyamin Netanyahu expressed his
reservations over the Children's Allowances policies and
reiterated the approach he took against the underclass. He
said he does not intend to restore Children's Allowances,
instead calling for a continuation of "the process of
returning the chareidim and Arabs to the work force."
Netanyahu's remarks ran counter to remarks made on several
occasions recently to the effect that the harsh budget cuts
he carried out took place when the national treasury was
empty and now that the coffers are full, some of the funding
can be restored.
In response to the Opposition Chairman's remarks, MK Rabbi
Moshe Gafni said, "Netanyahu brought an economic holocaust on
the underclass and the middle class by taking away from
Children's Allowances, unlike the rest of the Western world,
which provides much greater support than in the State of
Israel, and even in places where there are no allotments
protection is provided for the underclass.
"He increased the social gaps separating the rich and poor.
Everybody knows he wrought severe social damage in Israel,
and above all he is waging an ideological campaign against
the chareidi public, a campaign for which he won't be
forgiven. I offer him my praise for continuing to reveal his
true self so that all of us know who we're dealing with."
