Volunteer Month in Jerusalem
By Betzalel Kahn
Volunteer Month opened in Jerusalem last week with over
30,000 volunteers working at dozens of organizations and
municipal departments and serving needy segments of the
population in the areas of welfare, community services,
health care, immigrant absorption, etc. Six thousand of these
volunteers work at welfare bureaus throughout the city
regularly, providing for the needs of elderly citizens,
families of limited means and people with various
handicaps.
As part of a joint initiative by the Jerusalem Municipality's
Administration for Community Services and the Jerusalem
Volunteer Headquarters it was decided to hold a Volunteers'
Recognition Month. Recruitment drives for new volunteers and
volunteer training programs will be held and volunteers will
be invited to many activities, compensating them in a small
way for their much-appreciated efforts.
Mayor Rabbi Uri Lupoliansky opened Volunteer Month by handing
out Volunteer Cards to many volunteers. The Mayor said that
Jerusalem has more volunteer organizations than any other
place in Israel due to the unique fabric of the city's
population and the understanding this is a mitzvah that forms
the basis to our existence.
So far the Welfare Department's Unit for Municipal Volunteer
Work has issued 7,000 cards marked, "Latet BeLev
Shalem" for the years 2006-07, along with an information
pamphlet and special discounts at businesses around the
city.
