The Knesset Education Committee is scheduled to hold a
meeting to assess and seek ways to reduce discrimination
against the chareidi education system. The meeting was set
following a proposal by former Education Ministry Director
Ronit Tirosh, who said she is very familiar with the
situation and confirmed that the chareidi education system is
indeed discriminated against in numerous areas.
The committee also discussed the Dovrat Report for the 5767
school year. MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni lodged harsh criticism
against local authorities' conduct toward children in the
chareidi education system. "Does the chareidi education
system also receive what a secular child receives?" he asked.
"What you are doing is against the law. According to the law
all children are equal and the same [standards] applied in
the secular education system should be applied to the
chareidi education system rather than discriminating against
it."
Saying that he does not intend to continue sitting on the
committee and supporting various requests when the chareidi
education system is discriminated against, Rabbi Gafni stood
up and left the room, slamming the door behind him.
Immediately after his heated exit MK Tirosh confirmed Rabbi
Gafni's assertion that chareidi children really do not
receive the same treatment students receive in the general
education system.
