Rabbi Gafni Calls for Dayonim to be Appointed
by Eliezer Rauchberger
MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni issued a demand to man the benches of
the Rabbinate botei din. "We cannot allow a situation
in which the Rabbinate botei din hear matters with
incomplete benches," he said during a meeting of the Knesset
State Control Committee on Monday 26 Cheshvan to discuss the
State Comptroller's report on the Rabbinate botei
din.
Rabbi Gafni lodged criticism against the Justice Ministry,
which is currently responsible for the botei din,
saying that the ministry is not doing its job and is not
fulfilling its task. "It has not completed legislation on
this matter and has not transferred funding. There isn't even
enough money for air conditioners," he noted.
Rabbinate Courts Director Rabbi Eli Ben-Dahan said, "The
majority of defects cited in the Comptroller's report have
been rectified. There is no such thing as a dayan not
arriving at work. The dayonim work five hours a day,
just like judges." He also mentioned demands to provide
dayonim the same terms as judges.
