Charges of Higher Tax Evasion Rate Among Chareidim
Refuted
By R. Collins
A recent study conducted by Dr. Daniel Gottlieb, a senior
advisor to the Bank of Israel Commissioner, clearly
determined that chareidim do not evade taxes more than other
segments of the population, even though the accusation that
they do so repeated often as if it were a well-known fact by
various anti-chareidi elements.
The study compared data from the Bnei Brak income tax
district with data gathered in the rest of the country,
checking for systematic discrepancies between reported income
and audits. An examination of last year's data showed no
difference between the general population and the chareidi
sector.
Dr. Gottlieb, a lecturer at Ben Gurion University, quotes
Galit Ben Na'im of the State Income Administration, who says,
"There is no basis for the claim of higher rates of tax
evasion in the chareidi sector. In the commercial market the
rate of tax evasion [in the chareidi sector] is even lower
than the national rate."
