MK Gafni: Ethical Guidelines for Judges Should Apply to Dayonim

By Eliezer Rauchberger

MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni is demanding that the ethical guidelines for courts and judges apply to botei din and dayonim as well. "Why should the ethical guidelines apply only to the Court?" he asked.

Rabbi Gafni voiced his demand during a meeting of the Knesset Constitution, Law and Justice Committee to appoint a High Court president after consulting with the Justice Minister, to set obligatory ethics guidelines for the conduct of court judges in order to boost faith in judges. The committee decided to add an amendment to the proposed law to have ethical guidelines determined with the approval of the Knesset Constitution Committee. It was also proposed to give the ethical guidelines greater weight by allowing the Justice Minister to submit a complaint against a judge who deviates from them.

Rabbi Gafni's proposal to have the ethical guidelines apply to dayonim as well was designed to raise the status of the Rabbinate courts based on a request by the board. The committee decided to examine the matter and raise it for discussion at a later date.
