The Knesset Foreign Affairs and Security Committee approved a
directive to include soldier-teachers at the Chinuch Atzmai
and Maayan Hachinuch Hatorani systems.
Three years ago, when former MK Chemi Doron (Shinui) headed
the Foreign Affairs and Security Subcommittee, an order was
passed allowing soldiers to serve as teachers in every school
in Israel — except at the two chareidi networks.
MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni worked to rectify the unfair exclusion,
even involving Government Secretary Yisrael Maimon in his
efforts. Last year an order to include Chinuch Atzmai and
Maayan Hachinuch Hatorani in the teacher-soldier project was
approved by former Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz.
Shortly before the current order was brought for approval,
Rabbi Gafni asked Defense Minister Amir Peretz to ensure that
Chinuch Atzmai and Maayan Hachinuch Hatorani would not be
left off the list of schools participating in the program.
