Apartments in South for as Little as NIS 60 a Month

by Yated Ne'eman Staff

As part of efforts to encourage young couples to live in peripheral areas, Construction and Housing Minister Meir Shetreet announced that public housing would be made available to everyone, even those who do not meet the regular eligibility criteria of the Ministry of Housing. The first phase of the plan will include 400 housing units in Dimona, Mitzpeh Ramon and Yeruchom, and it will later be extended to other outlying towns.

"The Ministry's goals include encouraging residency in the Negev and the Galilee," says Shetreet. "A survey located hundreds of unused apartments in these areas. As Housing Minister I find it hard to see vacant apartments when families and young couples are yearning for a housing solution. Therefore I asked that the gates of public housing be opened even to those who do not meet the criteria for a public apartment."

An apartment survey conducted by the Department of Properties and Housing revealed that 188 housing units stand empty in Mitzpeh Ramon, 155 in Dimona and 58 in Yeruchom. The rent for these apartments ranges from NIS 500-600 ($115-$135), but the Housing Ministry plans to collect just 10 percent of this amount. The remaining 90 percent would be covered in exchange for money the tenants invest in renovations after Amidar Ltd. assesses the cost of the renovation work. The Ministry will even pay up to NIS 2,000 for electrical repairs if necessary.

In the coming weeks Amidar will issue an official announcement calling on young couples and families to come see the apartments.
