MK Gafni Prevents Bezeq from Carrying Out Large-Scale Shabbos Desecration

By Betzalel Kahn

MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni prevented Bezeq from carrying out a project that would have required hundreds of employees, including observant employees, to work on Shabbos. The order to halt the work was given by Bezeq's new board chairman, Atty. Dov Weissglass.

Prior to that, numerous religious employees contacted MK Gafni to complain about the decision to perform electrical work at one of the company's facilities and a professional exercise at a backup facility in Jaffa.

The work was scheduled to take place on Friday, from 1:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and on Shabbos Kodesh from 8:00 am to 3:30 p.m. The company's observant employees were shocked by the announcement.

Rabbi Gafni responded by contacting Weissglass, who officially took over as Bezeq board chairman just last week following a cooling off period since leaving the Prime Minister's Office. He told the Bezeq chairman that not only does the law prohibit performing work on Shabbos without a special permit from the Work and Rest Hours Law Commissioner, but a large public corporation like Bezeq should not even consider carrying out a project that would force employees to desecrate Shabbos openly — chilul Shabbos befarhesiyo.

On his very first day as Bezeq board chairman, Atty. Weissglass immediately ordered the project rescheduled for a weekday.
