MK Gafni: Only a Change in Values Can Save the Mainstream
Education System
By Eliezer Rauchberger
"Any structural change in the education system will not help
if there is no change in values," MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni told
the Knesset Education Committee meeting on Monday, during
which Education Minister Yuli Tamir presented her new plans
and goals. "A child in the chareidi education system knows
what he's going to school for, while in the general education
system a child does not know why he gets up in the morning.
He lacks values."
Tamir said, "Educational processes are slow, but there are
some things that can be changed right now." She said she
intends to emphasize education among young children and to
address issues such as raising teachers' salaries, raising
scholastic achievement, narrowing gaps, and more. In order to
carry out her plans she said she plans to request a funding
increase from the Finance Ministry.
MK Gafni noted that NIS 3.5 billion ($780,000,000) has been
cut from the education system budget in recent years, meaning
that the government has created education for the rich alone,
since those who have money at their disposal can hire a
private tutor. The same has happened in the area of health
care, he said.
Speaking about the chareidi sector he said that the chareidi
education system is severely discriminated against, "Yet
people say we are given money."
Committee Chairman MK Michael Melchior (Labor) expressed
concerns that the funding increase the education Ministry
requested was too small, precluding any significant change in
the Israeli education system.
