CER Appoints Rabbinical Director
by Cllr. A. M. Dunner
The Conference of European Rabbis appointed Rabbi Moshe Lebel
as Rabbinical Director of the organization. His role will be
to liaise with the Chief Rabbis of Europe, the congregational
Rabbis, the Botei-Din and the Chief Rabbinate of Israel on
Halachic issues. This will include issues of kashrus,
establishment of Jewish identity, conversion-geirus,
and divorce.
Rabbi Lebel, who divides his time between Moscow and
Jerusalem, heads the Toras Chaim Yeshiva in Moscow and is
also a member of the Moscow Beth-Din. He is a graduate of
Ponovezh Yeshiva and of Mir. He was sent to Russia in 1989 by
Rabbi Moshe Soloveitchik to head the yeshiva in Moscow. Many
of the graduates of this yeshiva have since taken up rabbinic
positions not only in Russia, but also in Israel and America.
He has a very close relationship with HaRav Eliashiv, HaRav
Steinman and HaRav Auerbach.
His appointment greatly enhances the work already being done
by the Conference of European Rabbis, and will give added
impetus to the decisions taken by this organization.
