Religious Council Workers Promised Back Wages by End of October
By G. Kleiman

Religious Council workers and pensioners will receive their pay by the end of October according to a promise by the Director-General of the Prime Minister's Office and instructions from the National Labor Court.

Court President Steve Adler and Judge N. Arad ruled on Monday the State must pay all Religious Council workers their back salaries and other benefits by Sunday, October 31. During Monday's deliberations Ilan Cohen, director-general of the Prime Minister's Office, reported that altogether 5,000 workers and 1,000 pensioners are owed a total of NIS 70 million ($16 million), and noting that 100 of the 134 religious councils have back salaries to pay. At some councils the salaries were paid but not benefits such as the employer's monthly deductions for various funds, e.g. karnot hishtalmut, karnot gemel and retirement funds. Cohen said the State cannot pay the religious council workers any compensation for the time that the wages were owed to them.

Cohen wanted to pay the worker benefits in several installations "due to taxation problems." Cohen also asked the Histadrut heads present at the deliberations to encourage workers who filed withheld wages claims against the State at the Labor Courts withdraw the claims.
