Chareidi Education System will Not be Required to Employ Teachers With Academic Degrees

By Eliezer Rauchberger

The Knesset Education Committee decided not to include teachers in the chareidi education system in a law that requires teachers to have a college degree.

Committee Chairman Polishok Bloch (Shinui) tried to pass the proposal sponsored by MK Solodkin (Likud), but committee member MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni (Degel HaTorah) asked to exempt teachers from the chareidi education system from this requirement, reasoning that at chareidi institutions the majority of instructors do not hold an academic degree, because they study at chareidi teacher-training schools certified by the Education Ministry instead of at universities. He said implementing the law at chareidi institutions as well would have grave consequences for instructors in this sector.
