Conservative Women Hold Another Provocation Gathering at
Kosel
By Betzalel Kahn
A group of Conservative women held another of its provocative
gatherings at the Kosel on Rosh Chodesh Adar, despite a High
Court directive to the State to build an alternative plaza at
the Robinson Arch at a cost of NIS 2 million to satisfy such
demands.
Work on the alternative gathering area, which even includes
handicapped access, was completed six months ago after the
State received an extension on the time allotted for the
project. The group's insistence on holding ceremonies at the
Western Wall Plaza indicates it does not accept the High
Court ruling.
Arriving on the morning of Rosh Chodesh, the cluster of
approximately 30 women went even further in their disgraceful
ceremonies this time as they removed a sefer Torah and
two women donned tallisos. Police arrested both women
for questioning.
The rov of the Kosel Hama'arovi, HaRav Shmuel Rabinovitz,
expressed shock over the act that was clearly designed to
provoke the religious worshipers who are the overwhelming
majority at the site and to stir dissent at the Jewish
people's holiest site. Not only does their conduct compromise
the holiness of the site, he said, but it also makes a
mockery of the High Court decision. Rav Rabinovitz said he
hopes the authorities will make every effort to distance
these women from the Western Wall Plaza to prevent
transforming the sacred site into a place of unnecessary and
detrimental dispute.
