Rabbi Gafni: Secular Youth Growing Up Without Values

By Eliezer Rauchberger

"The Israeli child grows up today without any values because the secular education system has gone bankrupt," said MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni in a meeting of the Knesset Education Committee on the topic of values and education. "Secular youth used to have values like land and the importance of the State, but today it has nothing."

He said genuine values are Jewish values and education should be founded solely on them. The general education system collapsed not because of a lack of funding but because of a lack of Jewish values, he added. On the other hand the chareidi education system, whose funding has diminished dramatically, continues to flourish due to its values and is constantly lavished with praise for its achievements.

The Education Ministry's Prof. Yaakov Katz recounted that when he studied in a non-religious Jewish school abroad he was shown consideration and efforts were made to accommodate his religious lifestyle in terms of Shabbos, kashrus, etc., whereas here in Israel he would never be accorded such treatment.
