Education Ministry Transfers the 15 percent Missing from Chareidi Kindergarten Funding

By Eliezer Rauchberger

The Education Ministry transferred funding to cover the 15 percent cut in the budget for chareidi kindergartens following protests by MK Rabbi Avrohom Ravitz over the government's failure to carry out its pledge to rectify this funding cut, which applied to chareidi kindergartens alone.

Degel HaTorah abstained from voting on a no-confidence motion two weeks ago as a show of protest over violations of the coalition agreement regarding religious services and the unequal funding for kindergartens. MK Rabbi Ravitz followed up the move with a letter to the Prime Minister complaining about unmet promises.

Although the abstention and letter did induce the Education Ministry to transfer the 15 percent cut from the chareidi kindergarten budget, Rabbi Ravitz says he still stands behind his demand to provide back payments for the 15 percent cut from the 2004 budget and that Government Secretary Yisrael Maimon would personally see to fulfilling his commitment regarding this matter.
