Shikun Ovdim, Inc. announced it intends to open the large new
mall in Givatayim on Shabbosim. Mayor Effi Shtentzler voiced
strong opposition, warning he will petition the court for a
closure order if the mall opens its doors on Shabbos.
Shikun Ovdim Director Uri Shani, a former head of the Prime
Minister's Office who maintains close ties with Ariel Sharon,
said the fines he stands to receive for violating the law
will not deter him. "In the worst case scenario I will
receive one or two fines until the municipality gets used to
the fact," he said.
In response to his remarks Mayor Shtentzler said, "I notified
the company from the start that I am opposed to the opening
of the mall on Shabbat and I will use all legal means
available..."
Givatayim Chief Rabbi Yosef Galiksberg said the move would be
harmful to the city in general and its chareidi residents in
particular, noting the mall is located in the middle of the
city in close proximity to several botei knesses. He
praised the Mayor's firm stance and threats to levy fines on
businesses that violate municipal ordinances, expressing his
hopes the owner of the mall would change their decision to
breach the walls of Shabbos in the heart of Givatayim.
Shikun Ovdim owns 50 percent of the mall, while Klal Bituach
and Phoenix own 25 percent each.
Surveys show the majority of city residents living near the
mall do not want to see it open on Shabbos based on forecasts
by real estate experts that the move would lower the value of
their homes by 10 percent.
The National Merchants Association also strongly opposes the
mall owners' plans to open on Shabbosim, which would decrease
profits for law-abiding store owners.
Legal figures expressed surprise over Shani's remarks
indicating his willingness to violate the law for the sake of
profiteering.
