Kashrus Certification Now Required for Over-the-Counter Drugs

By Betzalel Kahn

Following a new law that permits the sale of over-the-counter medications at supermarket chains the Chief Rabbinate, in coordination with the Health Ministry's department for drug and pharmaceutical registration, decided that companies will be able to label over-the-counter medication kosher only upon receiving Rabbinate approval.

Medications were not given kashrus certification in the past because as prescription medicines it was assumed that they were administered in cases of more serious illness. However the Chief Rabbinate's involvement is now necessary since over- the-counter medicines are not intended only for cases of serious illness and are sold in supermarkets, which are permitted to sell only kosher products.
