City of Bnei Brak Requests Yellow Pages Not Be
Distributed
by A. Cohen
The Mayor of Bnei Brak sent a letter to Mr. Moshe Ronen,
managing director of the Yellow Pages, asking him to
discontinue distributing the Tel Aviv business phone
directory in all of the chareidi and religious areas of Bnei
Brak.
According to the letter, the Mayor received numerous requests
from citizens and organizations complaining about the Tel
Aviv directory, whose cover and inner pages contain pictures
Bnei Brak residents find inappropriate. The letter also says
the City of Bnei Brak does not intend to dictate to any
company or group the contents of its advertisements and
photographs if they do not recognize the problems themselves,
but they are nevertheless requested to stop distributing the
directory in areas that invest great efforts into not
exposing children to such types of material. In addition
there are known to be non-religious organizations in Israel
and abroad that also object to the commercial use of these
types of pictures.
The Mayor writes that he is certain that a commercial
enterprise as well-known and reputable as the Yellow Pages
will respect the public's sensitivities by ceasing the
distribution of this directory in all parts of the city
populated by chareidi and national-religious residents, who
constitute 95 percent of the total population.
