Hachnosas Sefer Torah at Yeshivas Netzach Yisroel
By Betzalel Kahn
With HaRav Shmuel Auerbach, roshei yeshivos, rabbonim, and
public figures on hand, a rare sefer Torah--"mutzal
mei'eish"--was brought into Yeshivas Netzach Yisroel in
Jerusalem's Rechavia neighborhood.
The sefer Torah is one of two hundred collected by an
anonymous Jew at the outbreak of the Holocaust and given to a
non-Jew to hide in a church attic to keep them from falling
into the hands of the Nazis, yimach shemom. The scrolls
were discovered just a few years ago and returned following
negotiations. Only a few of the many sifrei Torah could
be repaired.
Yeshivas Netzach Yisroel is a continuation of Yeshivas
Rameilis, founded in Vilna 190 years ago and once headed by
HaRav Yisroel Salanter. The last rosh yeshiva before the
Holocaust was HaRav Shlomo Heiman and among the ramim
was HaRav Y.Z. Gustman, who revived the yeshiva after the
war. Today the yeshiva serves as a lighthouse for Rechavia
and the surrounding neighborhoods. At Kollel Netzach Yisroel
avreichim learn Shas and perform well on tests.
Hundreds of talmidim and alumni danced joyfully
together with local residents to honor the Torah. Among the
distinguished guests taking part were HaRav Shmuel Auerbach,
HaRav Yehoshua Eichenstein, rosh yeshivas Yad Aharon, HaRav
M. Barniker, rosh yeshivas Netzach Yisroel, Jerusalem Mayor
Rabbi Uri Lupoliansky and other rabbonim and public figures.
