Letter of Maran HaRav Eliashiv and HaRav Shteinman on Bolstering Torah Study, and Caution During Bein Hazmanim

For many years, when the yeshivas are not in session, such as the months of Nisan, Tishrei and Av, many take advantage of this time, as well, for Torah learning in what are known as yeshivos bein hazmanim.

Yet at the same time there are some who take trips to various places some of which are dangerous to visit [because of both] spiritual dangers and physical dangers. In fact every trip involves [an element of] danger. As Chazal said, "He who says, `What a lovely tree! What a lovely pasture!' is liable with his soul."

This [awareness] is demanded of bnei yeshivos more than other people, for they have had a taste of the Torah and [therefore] they should not idle away their time, but should help with the holiday preparations if necessary, or rest a bit if needed because they have exerted themselves in Torah. However this time period should not be used for excursions, even if one's intention is to see the gadlus of Hashem Yisborach, for as a result of these excursions every year there are some who suffer accidents, may Hashem Yisborach spare us.

The gedolei roshei yeshivos periodically told us their opinion on the danger these trips involve. Nevertheless almost every year terrible things transpire. Even this year, as soon as the official studies ended in the yeshivas two bochurim lost their lives, and this cries up to the heart of Heaven.

Please, talmidei hayeshivos! Happy is your lot that you chose the path of Torah. Why should you follow convoluted paths that bring so much sorrow? And please beware not to do things that endanger human life. Make use of this time for rest if you need it, [devoting] the majority of your time to Torah study, and in the merit of Torah study and guarding your health, may you merit to rise along the correct track and ti grow in accordance with the will of HaKodosh Boruch Hu and all Am Yisroel.

Yosef Sholom Eliashiv

Aharon Yehuda Leib Shteinman
