Calls to Enforce Modesty Guidelines on Mehadrin Bus Lines to and from Rechasim
by Y. Ariel

Rabbonim in Rechasim are calling on the public to complain about breaches in the standards of modesty they set for the mehadrin bus lines to and from the town. Their call was issued after numerous complaints about passengers from nearby places who violate the guidelines. At a meeting held at the office of Council Head Rabbi Yitzchok Reich, dozens of Egged drivers and traffic inspectors were briefed on the standards of modesty the community demands on these bus lines.

At the end of the meeting, drivers said they now had a clearer understanding of what is expected of them, but maintained that the passengers themselves must complain if the regulations are violated so that the driver can address the problem immediately.

The guidelines formulated by the rabbonim of Rechasim appear on the new schedules for the mehadrin line. According to the guidelines, bus service is to be provided only to passengers in modest dress who conduct themselves seemingly, without raising their voices. The first four rows are reserved for men, the back section for women and the middle section for families, just like the existing practice on Haifa's mehadrin lines. Also, the driver is instructed not to play the radio.

The rabbonim have asked all passengers on Rechasim's mehadrin line to complain about any violation of the regulations to the driver and if the problem is not solved, to call the information center immediately.
