Jerusalem Disconnected from National Water Carrier During Pesach
by Betzalel Kahn

After extensive efforts, Jerusalem Mayor Rabbi Uri Lupoliansky managed to persuade the national water supplier Mekorot to disconnect Jerusalem from the national water carrier in order to supply city residents with fully kosher water during Pesach.

The move came in response to an announcement by Infrastructure Minister Yosef Paritzky (Shinui) that the national carrier would continue to transport water from the Kinneret to the entire country throughout Pesach this year, despite the longstanding practice in chareidi cities of bringing in water from underground wells during Pesach. There is a chance that water from the open lake is contaminated by chometz, while spring water from underground certainly has no chometz.

For decades Jerusalem's entire water supply came from reservoirs during Pesach. In response to the Infrastructure Minister's announcement, Mayor Lupoliansky met with various figures involved in the issue until he was able to convince Mekorot to supply Jerusalem with well water alone.
