Shlomo Karlinsky, z"l
by Betzalel Kahn

Shlomo Karlinsky, z"l, the son of HaRav Yaakov Karlinsky shlita of Jerusalem's Ramot neighborhood, was killed in a car accident on the 5th night of Chol Hamoed Sukkos on his way to perform a devar mitzvah and while carrying a gemora in his hand.

Shlomo was born on 26 Shevat 5743 (1983) and despite his relatively young age he reached rare levels of excellence in Torah and yiras Shomayim. He left behind numerous writings, including sugyos on the Shas and yiras Hashem, very few of which he was able to print during his lifetime.

Rosh Yeshivas Tifrach HaRav Aviezer Piltz opened the levaya with divrei his'orerus on what is demanded us at this time. Later Shlomo's father parted from him and asked his forgiveness before the mittoh was taken out. Following stimas hagolel HaRav Don Segal spoke about the Succos holiday, saying during Chag Haasif, the gathering festival, a ben aliyoh who had reached a state of wholeness was gathered in. Citing HaRav Dovid Povarsky he noted that a deceased person being accompanied by the public dressed in Yom Tov attire, and although "mitzta'er pottur min hasuccah," there is no such exemption from joy on the festival, demonstrating there is no distinction between sorrow and the joy of Yom Tov.

Since the deceased was found with a note in his pocket outlining a private resolution made by all the members of his chaburah on erev Yom Kippur to increase mussar learning and to strengthen the mussar session at the yeshiva, his friends and family were inspired to increase their mussar study le'ilui neshomoh of Shlomo Karlinsky, z"l, and to make a commitment to study a mussar sefer from start to finish by the yahrtzeit on the 20th of Tishrei.
