Education Minister: "Salaries for Directors of Cultural
Institutions Unreasonable"
by Eliezer Rauchberger
State Comptroller Eliezer Goldberg, who is currently
preparing a report on the salaries of directors of culture
and arts institutions, to be published in another three
months, told the Knesset State Control Committee last week
that he has sent a preliminary draft to the subjects of the
report for their response.
Committee Chairman MK Amnon Cohen (Shas) protested against
the high salary levels, citing several examples including an
annual salary package worth NIS 670,000 ($153,000) for the
Director-General of Habima and an annual salary package of
NIS 860,000 ($196,500) for the Artistic Director of the Bat-
Sheva Ensemble.
MKs who participated in the meeting said the directors'
salaries should be capped and reduced, calling the present
situation extreme and untenable.
Education Minister Limor Livnat said the salary levels of
cultural institutions directors is unreasonable, adding that
she expected the directors to serve as examples in times of
budget cuts and economic crisis. She also announced
intentions to place limitations on the directors' salaries in
the future.
