Efforts to Raise Awareness of Sanctity at Kosel
Hamaaravi
by Betzalel Kahn
New signs have been posted at the Western Wall Plaza asking
visitors to preserve the sanctity of the site by dressing
moderately and appropriately, turning off cell phones and
refraining from conversation or other noise that could
disturb prayers. Initiated by the Ministry of Religious
Affairs and the Director of the National Center for the
Development of Holy Places, R' Yosef Shwinger, the signs also
request that tourists refrain from smoking or using cell
phones and cameras in the Western Wall Plaza on Shabbos and
Yomim Tovim. Alongside the signs are explanations on the
holiness of the Kosel Hamaaravi, the holiest site to the
Jewish people.
Rav Shmuel Rabinovitz, rov of the Kosel Ma'arovi and the holy
places, is calling on the public to avoid cell phone
conversations near the Kosel Hamaaravi, saying not only does
this violate the sanctity of the site and disturb praying,
but it also constitutes chilul Hashem because of the
many visitors regularly on hand.
