Health Capsules
by Dr. Reuven Bruner, Ph.D.

*§ Pasta is usually free of cholesterol -- except egg noodles, which are made with egg yolks and contain 55 milligrams of cholesterol per cup. That's 18 percent of the 300 milligrams daily limit recommended by the AMA.

*§ One fast-food chicken sandwich has as much fat as 1 pint of ice cream.

*§ In a recent study, people were told to cook without the salt they normally used and instead, to add as much salt as they wanted at the table. They ended up using 50 percent less salt than usual.

*§ For improved digestion, try eating some of your vegetables raw. When you chew uncooked veggies, your mouth releases enzymes that activate the digestive system before the food even reaches your stomach.

*§ About 1 in 10 people with asthma--mostly adults--are allergic to aspirin. In individuals who suffer from asthma, aspirin may lead to an asthma attack or make an attack worse. Ibuprofen, such as Advil, Medipren or Motrin, may cause a similar reaction. People with asthma should avoid these medicines and use acetaminophen (Acamol or Tylenol) instead.

*§ A medicine commonly found in many nasal/decongestants, anti- allergy drugs and diet aids--phenylpropanolamine--can increase blood pressure. Whenever you get your blood pressure checked, be sure to report all the medicines you take, including any from over-the- counter.
