700 May be Fired from Chinuch Atzmai
by Yated Ne'eman Staff

The Ministry of Education ordered the Chinuch Atzmai to cut 8,000 hours of instruction. As a result, the system may be forced to let go as many as 700 teachers throughout the country. This was announced by Rabbi Meir Luria and Rabbi Avrohom Yosef Lazerson, the two heads of the Chinuch Atzmai.

In discussions it was pointed out that in the Chinuch Atzmai system, cuts of this scale must include parts of the basic core instruction. In the general education system the cuts mostly applied to secondary subjects and electives. The Chinuch Atzmai system is already burdened by large classes and inadequate facilities and these cuts will make the situation intolerable.

The heads of the Chinuch Atzmai said that they have not faced a threat of this magnitude since the founding of the system.

Last week the Shinui representative in the Knesset Finance Committee announced that chareidi education will not be cut back. UTJ representatives on the Finance Committee quickly countered that there was no basis for the announcement and that it was a transparent attempt to build resentment against the chareidim.
