IDF: Soldiers Kidnapped in Lebanon Probably Not Alive

The IDF announced on Monday that the three soldiers kidnapped by Hizbullah on Mount Dov a year ago are most probably not alive. The announcement was first made to the families and later to the press. The IDF asked its Chaplain to declare the three missing soldiers "casualties whose place of burial is unknown." The families said that they continue to pray and hope for the return of their loved ones.

Arson and Vandalism in a Jewish School in Marseilles

Two buildings in the Jewish Gan Pardess elementary school in Marseilles were set on fire in an attack this past Sunday (11 Cheshvan) that was clearly motivated by antisemitism. No one was in the school when the attack took place. Antisemitic slogans were scrawled on the walls of the main structure. One read: "Bin Laden Will Win."

Catskills Casinos Approved Over Orthodox Objections

Agudath Israel of America voiced its deep disappointment over the New York State Legislature's approval last Thursday of a bill that will expand legal gambling in the state by permitting new casinos in the Catskill Mountains and western New York.

Bus 402 from Bnei Brak to Jerusalem Launched

At the end of a prolonged battle, in the course of which the Kav Mehadrin bus line was launched, Egged and Dan began operating bus route number 402 between Jerusalem and Bnei Brak. Now that the Transportation Ministry has granted it the necessary permits, the line began running this Sunday, 11 Cheshvan (October 28).

Period for Housing Grants Extended

According to an agreement between the Housing Ministry and the Finance Ministry, the Government has extended the period for the granting of benefits for the purchase of apartments until the end of the civil year (16 Teves). New conditions have been set up for the grants.

Jewish Cabinet Minister Calls On South African Jews To Support Palestinians

A Jewish South African Cabinet Minister has caused a furor by calling on South African Jews to join the Government's campaign to support "justice for Palestine." Water Affairs Minister Ronnie Kasrils, a highly respected veteran of the anti-apartheid struggle, made his remarks in Parliament during a debate over a report on a multiparty fact-finding mission to Israel and Palestine which took place in July this year.

U.S. Official Warns of Terror Attacks Against the U.S.

The U.S. Government announced on Monday that it had information that terrorist attacks were planned against it within the next week. The announcement was made by Attorney General John Ashcroft. On October 11 a similar warning was issued.

1,000 People Learning at the Ovos Ubonim Program in England

Motzei Shabbos Noach saw the start of the winter Ovos Ubonim program in England. In Golders Green there are 5 centers: GGBH, Goschalk's, Dayan Ehrentreu's, Eitz Chaim and Kehal Chassidim. In Manchester there are 4 centers: Stein Court, Machzikei Hadass, Sha'arei Tefilla-Prestwich and Zichron Yechezkel. All told there is a total of well over 400 children learning with their fathers. There are also centers in Edgware and Gateshead.

HaRav Eliyahu Shrem, zt"l

On 4 Cheshvan, a huge throng accompanied HaRav Eliyahu Shrem zt"l, rosh yeshiva and founder of Yeshivas Torah Vehoro'oh and its institutions, on his last earthly journey. HaRav Shrem was 69 at the time of his petiroh.
