Jerusalem Connected to Electric Trunk Line
by N. Katzin
The Israel Electricity Company has announced the connection
of Jerusalem to the nationwide electric grid at a voltage of
400 kilowatts. The connection was made by means of two lines
branching off from the Tsipit and Ramat Chovav electric
wiring stations in the south, joining with the Even Sapir
station in the Jerusalem hills, a station equipped with some
of the most advanced technological devices in the world,
under computer control.
Until this connection was made, Jerusalem was supplied with
electricity by transmission lines of 161 kilowatts only.
This often resulted in system overload. Yaakov Rozen,
director of the Israel Electric Company, noted that the
better connection of Jerusalem to the grid will mean a rise
in the system's capacity, dependability and durability as
well as in quality of electricity supply to the capital.
The Electric Company has invested 28 million dollars in the
project. Efforts were made to take into account
environmental factors and to preserve natural reserves,
Rozen noted. Since a large percentage of the lines pass
through forest area, they were built out of "pipe" poles,
unique in that they take up only one-tenth of the space of
regular electric power towers. The new line is a section of
an electric "ring" which is to encircle Jerusalem.
Yigal Ben Aryeh, director of the Jerusalem branch of the
Electric Company, reports that construction of the 30-
kilometer- long line took three years.
