HaRav Chaim Kanievsky Urges Support of Shmittah Observant Farmers
by A. Cohen

In a letter to a rabbinical contingent from the Nationwide Center for Shmittah Observant Farmers, HaRav Chaim Kanievsky wrote: "Assistance to the shmittah observant farmers to the best of one's abilities is a great obligation. Those who lend them a hand are actually participating in the mitzvah of letting the land lie fallow. Those assisting them will be blessed with the Torah blessing of, `Vetzivisi es birchosi,' which includes everything."

Last week, a contingent of rabbonim and askonim of the Nationwide Center visited HaRav Kanievsky in his home. They reported on the Center's activities in support of thousands of shmittah observant farmers in Eretz Yisroel who have let their fields lie fallow: doing so with courage, fortitude, and joy and dedication as commanded by the Torah.

Center activists reported on the tremendous increase in the number of shmittah observers in Eretz Yisroel in this shmittah year.

HaRav Kanievsky welcomed the contingent warmly and issued a fervent call to everyone to rally to the aid of shmittah observant farmers in Eretz Yisroel. He closed the abovementioned letter with, "On the merit of shevi'is, we are redeemed and are not exiled from our land, as Chazal have said (Tanchuma parshas Behar). We are, therefore, obligated to help the shmittah observant farmers, giborei hakoach osei devoro and to strengthen and encourage them."
