Toronto Yeshivos Raise Tuition Fees
by Yated Ne'eman Staff

Tuition fees at the 13 Toronto Board of Jewish Education (BJE) schools are up this academic year by an average 4.5 percent over last year, according to the Canadian Jewish News. The increase a year ago over the previous year was 2.5 percent.

This year, the full tuition for a year of study at the Ner Israel Yeshiva is $10,900, as it was last year. (All figures are in Canadian dollars.) This fee is, however, 6.4 percent more than was charged the year before. Room and board is an additional $2,000. At the Beth Jacob High School for Girls this year full tuition is $10,350, compared to $9,775 the year before. Eitz Chaim Day School will charge $7,800, compared the $7,500 the year before.

The fees at non-religious schools are comparable. The United Synagogue Day School charges $8,250 compared to $7,850 last year. The Leo Baeck Day School charges $7,833 (including a donation to the building fund) compared to $7,533 last year.

Bernard Shoub, director of school finances at the BJE, said the increase at Beth Jacob High School for Girls is because the student body has shrunk, thanks to the opening of two other Orthodox schools for girls, Bnos Bais Yaakov High School and Tiferes Bais Yaakov High School.

Overall, the Toronto BJE system has over 11,000 pupils, while another 6,000 are in the supplementary system. Shoub said it was too early to say how many students will get a subsidized education this year. Last year, roughly 40 percent of students in the BJE system did not pay full fees.

The Zareinu Educational Centre for multi-challenged children received a grant of $100,000 from the BJE last year. Shoub said he expects the same amount will be granted to Zareinu this year. Full fees at Zareinu, which is also affiliated with the BJE, will be $15,750 this year, compared to $15,000 last year.
