Appeal to High Court to Disqualify Shderot Religious Council Composition
by B. Rabinowitz

The Gesher Lev party in the Shderot City Council, headed by Attorney Yosef Pinchas Cohen, appealed last week to the High Court, demanding that it disqualify the makeup of the city Religious Council even though had been officially approved by Religious Affairs Minister Yossi Beilin.

In the appeal filed by Attorney Eyal Nun, the High Court was asked to issue a restraining order and to arrange the election of a balanced Religious Council makeup, one according appropriate representation to all religious groups in the city as well as a representative on behalf of the local rabbinate.

The ten-page petition focuses mainly on disqualification of the candidacy of Moshe Peretz, a member of the Labor Party Central Committee. This is the party of Religious Affairs Minister Yossi Beilin. The petition claims that Peretz has helped advance many party issues in Shderot and even contributed one of the buildings he owns for party activities in the city.

At this stage, publication of the Council composition in the official records has been delayed due to the resignation of the Shas representative, Yitzhak Yifrach. Mayor of Shderot, Eli Moyal, has announced his intention to convene the City Council to elect a candidate to replace Yifrach. In this way, he hopes to pave the way for Beilin's approval of the new Religious Council composition.
