NEFESH Grows by Leaps and Bounds
by Yated Ne'eman Staff

Nefesh UK, part of The International Network of Orthodox Mental Health Professionals, continues to expand its activities and membership. The latest program for NEFESH UK members featured Rabbi Dr. Ephraim Becker of Telz-Stone, Israel, speaking on the topic of, "Analyzing the Therapeutic Encounter in the Light of Ahavas Yisroel." Rabbi Becker consults regularly with rabbonim in Eretz Yisroel to ensure that both the mode of therapy as well as its orientation are guided by authentic halocho and hashkofo. There are plans afoot for a more ambitious program to be run in conjunction with NEFESH International in the not-too- distant- future.

The Inaugural NEFESH Israel Conference will take place on March 5th and 6th at the Shaarei Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem. The topic for the conference is, "Critical Mental Health Issues Facing the Religious Community in Israel" and it will feature seminars, training sessions and workshops with English and Hebrew translations when necessary.

The 5th NEFESH International Conference will be held this year in Baltimore. The conference will take place next December 20th to 23rd with pre-conference Intensive Institutes scheduled for December 19th and 20th. Past conferences saw over 400 participants joining together to discuss and debate mental health issues facing Orthodox Jewish communities around the world, and with even greater participation from Israel, Europe, UK and South America, the conferences have continued to grow.

Leading figures such as Rav Yissochor Frand and Rav Dovid Cohen have shared their hashkofo insights and halachic decisions. As the Conference takes place over a Shabbos there is the wonderful opportunity of participation in the oneg Shabbos and Melave Malka and one can enjoy stories and niggunim from Rabbi Abraham Twerski and others. Details of the above programs can be found on www.nefesh.org or through NEFESH UK by contacting Rabbi Jonathan Dove at 07966 134-838.
