Meron Traffic Jams
by Y. Ariel

The Office of the Chairman of the Knesset Internal Affairs Committee, MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni, received numerous complaints this week about traffic jams on Lag BaOmer both to and from Meron. Many visitors to Meron complained that police traffic control had been a failure. As a result, there were numerous traffic jams that lasted for many hours: in many cases the trip from the Tel Aviv area to Meron took more than six hours.

Rabbi Gafni had planned to hold an urgent meeting on the issue within the framework of the Committee for Internal Affairs, which he heads. However, Commander-in-Chief of the Police Department Shlomo Aharonishki said that the police has set up its own investigative committee. As a result, Rabbi Gafni announced that the Committee will not deliberate on the issue until it receives the Police report.

Reports from the scene said that the entire transportation system there collapsed in the middle of the night. There were many complaints against Egged. A spokesman for the bus company said that 30 of its buses waited for three hours to leave the parking lots, unable to do so because of the traffic.
