A few score members of the Shai organization (the Association
for the Preservation of the Jewish Character of Israeli
Society) demonstrated last week in front of the office of the
Prime Minster in Jerusalem.
The demonstration was attended by Jewish residents of
Jerusalem who had been born in the C.I.S. The demonstrators,
among them well-known aliya activists from the 70's, spoke in
Hebrew, English, Yiddish and Russian, as they protested the
continuation of the mass importation of non-Jews from the
C.I.S., and the destruction Minister Sharansky is wreaking on
the nation by means of the measures he is taking in order to
permit the unlimited entry of non-Jews from those countries
into Israel.
This past Monday, activists of the association protested in
front of the Jewish Agency in Jerusalem. The demonstrators
held placards with slogans such as "Prevent the Jewish Agency
from Importing non-Jews," "Block the Channels for the
Importation of non-Jews," "Stop the Importation of non-Jews."
The demonstrators turned to passersby who crowed the area,
and explained that the personnel of the Jewish Agency earn
their livelihoods from recruiting aliya candidates from the
ranks of non-Jews interested in leaving the C.I.S. The
passersby expressed their support of the demonstrators, and
some were very outspoken in their opposition to the policy of
importing of non-Jews from the C.I.S.
Later on the demonstrators returned to the Prime Minister's
office. One of the demonstrators cried out over the
microphone: "Ehud Barak, I appeal to you as one soldier to
another: Come out of your trauma. Stop importing non-Jews.
Take a good look at the surging crime rate, the ever
increasing rate of juvenile delinquency, and the destructive
effects of the non-Jews from C.I.S. on our young Israeli
soldiers."
