Chanukah Thoughts from the Mashgiach HaRav Don Segal shlita

by Israel Rosner

3

In an address delivered especially on Chanukah this past Motzei Shabbos in his beis medrash, HaRav Don Segal said, among other things: "It behooves us to contemplate the miracle of 'many in the hands of the few, the mighty in the hands of the weak' which took place precisely because of the 'contaminated in the hands of the pure ones, the wicked in the hands of the righteous and the wicked in the hands of the Torah followers.'

"There is nothing new about the fact that precisely the pure and righteous were victorious. The reason is apparent; it is precisely because they were pure and righteous and were immersed in Torah study."

He continued emphatically "Even in our times, when we are a minority against the barbaric ones who rule over us, determined to obliterate us, we must remember that it is possible to overcome their power of 'the profaned against the pure and the wicked against the righteous.' It is obvious that they are impure, but it is our obligation to reinforce ourselves with sanctity and the advantages and powers of the righteous ones by fortifying ourselves with Torah study, which is the true and only source of the strength of our people.

"The situation today is reminiscent of the declaration and cry of 'Who is for Hashem, rally onto me.' We must reinforce ourselves continuously and increasingly with rededication through purity and righteousness in the realm of Torah, and disregard all other preoccupations, for these are public needs which we all depend upon in order to survive.

"I heard from the late HaRav Chaim Brim who related that upon various occasions, the Chazon Ish would comment on current happenings as being 'part of the way of the world.' There were other events to which he would refer to as being 'part of the Plan, as being a stage for the events of the future.'

"We must also embrace this attitude regarding current events, as not being a natural course of things, but to realize that everything we see is preparation for 'He is coming to judge the world.' If we say that we are being threatened with decimation, whether physically or spiritually through various decrees, this is not to be taken as natural occurrences but as stages in the 'footsteps of the coming of Moshiach.'

"A step closer. Our part is to increase and intensify ourselves as 'the pure ones, the righteous ones who are absorbed in Torah study, who increase their prayers and supplications that we be meritorious to see the Geula Sheleima.

"If we wish to know which area precisely we are meant to intensify, we can learn this from our very enemies. Where we see the powers of evil investing their main thrust in battle, this is a sign as to the very crux of the war and which must indicate our very power of defense and ultimate success.

"If we see the enemy concentrating upon attacking the yeshivos, the chadorim, the Bais Yaakov network etc., it is obvious that this is the scene of battle. And even if they be 'many' and also appear 'mightier' than us, we are the 'pure ones, the tzadikim engrossed in Torah study.' By our dedication and increased efforts in our very areas of strength, we will merit that during these days of Chanukah, we shall invoke as of yore, those great miracles of 'delivering the mighty in the hands of the weak and the many in the hands of the few."
