A person famous to the general public, an expert chef by profession and a Leftist in his world-view, published an interesting article expressing regret for his beliefs up till now. I must admit that I have no idea who he is but the very fact that his words aroused a storm in the media testifies that he is well known to the Israeli urbane public.
He writes as follows:
"I admit and confess that I was among the leaders of those crying for peace and publicly supporting it. For the past thirty years of my life, I have traveled throughout the world, from Norway to Jordan, all over Israel and the world. I had idyllic dreams about a great utopian world, replete with quiet and brotherly love.
"I am ashamed and beg the pardon of my people for having partaken in the big deception of the Left. I pray that the Creator forgive me. We must totally destroy the fiendish Hamas and their ilk. The Jewish People lives on forevermore! Shabbat Shalom!"
To be sure, his words did not appear without a commensurate reaction. The enlightened Leftist camp raged against him with vehemence, en mass, attacking his public treason. But he retaliated, writing,
"Wow! How many reactions I evoked these past two days from people to whose camp I belonged only moments ago and who bashed such sentiments so long as they came from the other side of the fence. Don't take it to heart. Yet I still vilify everything which the extreme Left represents or publicizes. I feel deceived from the depths of my soul for having been captivated by their hollow slogans for peace."
He continues by telling of the active part he took in the past in attempts to convince others of the stance that Israel is to blame for the terror inflicted upon it.
"I led and nurtured the campaigns for peace and the view that there is a Palestinian people that desires peace. I was an integral figure in the illusory conception that we are to blame. We are always culpable. How easy it was to indict the Right and point the accusing finger at them. The Palestinians are the overpowered people to be pitied. They truly desire peace; they are a people of love and fraternity to all of mankind. We are the ones at fault; we Jews are responsible for everything [As if] we are the bloodthirsty ones who seek only to destroy again and again.
"How pathetic I was, living in an enlightened Tel Aviv milieu, feeding myself fabricated stories. It was so easy and comfortable to part of this society. Successful restaurants, cushioned with the infinite self-love of such a pampered life, subscribed to 'Ha'aretz' which periodically presented the activities of the Betzelem organization spouting rabid hatred for Israel.
"When I woke up to the devastation which we experienced, I understood that we are part of a cult from the movies. Perhaps this can be blamed on the Tel Aviv society of the good life where the means justifies the end. Perhaps being a Leftist seemed so right and proper, especially since as a chef, I made my living in this world!
"But let us understand that we are dealing with a monster, and any adjective of amity is doing them a favor."
And he sums up:
"Let us deal with the sorry reality and see to destroy the cancerous growths of the fanatic Islam in our areas. Am Yisrael Chai!"
