A Committee to Examine the Medical Community's Actions on Yemenite Children
by D. Rosen
Health Minister Rabbi Moshe Arbel has appointed a committee to examine the medical community's actions on Yemenite, Oriental and Balkan children. It was created in response to the criticism of the draft of a report which an internal team of the Health ministry prepared, collated by a student in the ministry and reviewed by the then person responsible for preventing racism, Professor Itamar Groto, deputy director of the Health Ministry at the time.
Professor Shifra Schwartz, who was appointed to examine the draft of the report, pointed out methodic discrepancies in its makeup and research approaches. This resulted in suspending the draft and the suggestions and conclusions which it recommended.
Subsequently, a new committee has been appointed now by the Health Minister to examine the involvement of the medical community in this affair. The ministry has enabled it to access all the data needed to reach its conclusions.
The committee will examine the facts from the dates of 1948 through 1954, congruent to the years which were studied and researched by the previous investigative government committees during this period.
