Torah leaders and prominent poskim have recently issued a special letter in which they call upon the public to buy insurance policies for severe disability which will help many people who, like their predecessors, find themselves devastated by situations of accidents and the like, which causes them to forfeit their role as breadwinners and reducing them to helpless dependency.
Under the title of "A Public Appeal from Rabbonim and Poskim" they write:
"To our brethren everywhere, we are aware that in this past year we have experienced pain and agony through various distressing situations which have afflicted the members of our sacred communities.
"We have heard from the experts of the "Menorah Insurance" and the "Leumit Health Services" that many young men suffering from physical and mental ailments due to difficult accidents, seek to advise their friends to take out an insurance disability policy, for who knows what lies in the future."
Poskim determine that it is highly advised, as part of one's obligation, to acquire such an insurance disability policy to avoid a situation where they find themselves in a terrible situation due to an accident or another misfortune.
They write, "After examining the facts, we feel that whoever is able to pay for such a policy is obligated to acquire a disability insurance policy while he is still young and healthy, to avoid a situation when it is too late to do so. This comes under the necessity of hishtadlus for himself and for the members of his family lest he find himself in a dire situation."
